"Raw Cigar Daddy" is the first of its kind.
As you know I famously use matt black steel with infills of vintage black leather which really kick when set against a plain light background. This latest piece called Raw Cigar Daddy is a result of a thought process - like a loop...that has happened every time I have created a piece in steel.
What I mean by that is just before they are sprayed with their usual black matt finish I've always thought how amazing they looked with just a polished and ground raw steel finish. Those who see my work often comment on the shadowplay that my traditional style of work offers. This new piece kinda juxtaposes of that - in that light is now the hook as the rough-ground, raw finish reflects light at so many different angles it seems to sparkle as you move around it.
And the subject....well many of us have a thing for a hot Cigar Daddy and I'm definitely in that camp. I sketched him 5 years ago...he'd been sitting in my journal on a page with scribbled materials and estimation lists for jobs I was doing at the time. I knew someday he'd be something but the time was never right - always something more pressing to do. And then the time was right! So I hope you like Raw Cigar Daddy...raw steel mounted onto black painted marine ply. Chuffin' in that fat 'gar, he can be hung anywhere since the background and detail are all as one unit.
